Happy Business Woman’s Day (yesterday)!

Apparently I’m still operating in 2013.

When I was looking ahead for next week, I thought that today was Tuesday the 22nd. Well, clearly, it’s not.

So, I’m going to act like to day is Tuesday, September 22nd, when it is really September 23rd. Please don’t get confused! I already confused myself!

Today (Yesterday) is Business Woman’s Day, or what I would like to have renamed to “Woman in the Workforce Day!”
I’m sending all my love to those woman out there who work their tails off making a living for themselves or their family or simply because they want to work! If you are a woman, and you have a job, Happy Business Woman’s Day!

But wait! I don’t want ANYONE to feel left out! For those of you who aren’t woman, or don’t identify yourself as a woman, it also happens to be Elephant Appreciation Day (yesterday)!

I saw this post on A Beautiful Mess a few weeks ago about using printable Shrinky Dink paper to make 3-Step refrigerator magnets. It turned out to be just that easy!

I picked two different images to use, one for each holiday and edited them on my computer.

I found Ink Jet printable Shrinky Dink paper at my local Micheal’s Craft store for $12.99 USD for a pack of 6 pages. I don’t think this was a bad price considering I got 24 magnets out of it.

I chose Rosie the Riveter as the decal for my magnet, mainly because of the symbol she is for woman in the workforce. After reading the instructions, I made sure to BRIGHTEN MY IMAGE BY 50%! Did I say that loud enough? BRIGHTEN MY IMAGE BY 50 PER-CENT! It might look goofy, but I’m telling you, the instructions are there for a reason.

Brightened by 50

After I had all my images printed on my Shrinky Dink paper (in addition to my ones for Elephant Appreciation), I began to cut each image out and prepare for shrinkage! (Side note: I can’t believe there is no red squiggly under the word “shrinkage”)

Shrink

Read the instructions and make your best judgement according to your oven on what to bake. I tried a few different temps and times before I found that 300 degrees for five minutes works best for MY oven. Everyone’s oven is different. Keep an eye on the first batch to see what works well and what doesn’t. By the last batch you’ll be an old pro!

When your pull your creations out of the oven, immediately use something to press them flat (I used a legal pad). JUST PLEASE BE CAREFUL TO NOT BURN YOURSELF!

Both Days

Once they are cooled, remove them from the baking sheet and allow for further cooling. Adhere a magnet to the back with a hot glue gun and you’re ready to celebrate!

Everyone in my office LOVED their magnets. They are small enough to not be obnoxious and fit right on their cabinets!

How are you celebrating today (yesterday) ?

Note: Today September 23rd’s actual holidays are:
Checkers Day
Restless Leg Awareness Day (or as my mom likes to call it “Happy Feet Day”)

What are some other holidays you are celebrating this week!? How are you celebrating them?

Happy Collect Rocks Day!

Happy Rock Day!

Every Tuesday we have an office meeting. I quite enjoy meetings, however I know that most people don’t.

I was thinking about meetings in the shower the other day (where everyone does their best thinking), and I came up with (what I thought) would be a wonderful idea.

I’ve decided that every Tuesday, during out weekly meetings, I’m going to make a small craft that coincides with the holiday that day.

But, Jennifer, there isn’t possibly a holiday for every day of the year!
Excellent question (statement?), reader, but there is indeed! There is a holiday for every day of the year!

Alas! September 16th! Happy Collect Rocks Day!
Dating back to before people can remember, rock collecting has been a childhood favorite for centuries!* Who can’t remember their first pet rock? (Well, I can, I never had one).

Happy Rock Day!

It’s never too late to start! You can try this super easy (an inexpensive) Collect Rock Day craft! All you need is a bag of rocks, google eyes, and some hot glue (elmer’s glue works too, just takes longer to dry).
Do I need to write instructions? (Hint: Glue the eyes to the rocks, I suggest a parent to help with the hot glue if you are under the age of 10)

Voila!! Not only do you have a quick and easy gift for your friends, you will also impress them that you know it is National Collect Rock Day!

Other Fun Holidays to Celebrate today:
Step Family Day
Mayflower Day (I’m assuming the pilgrim ship)
National Play Doh Day (should have chose this one!)
Working Parents Day (thank you, mom and dad!)

Are you celebrating any holiday’s today?
Tell me about it!

Jennifer
