Don’t throw is away, recycle it!
This is probably one of my favorite dresses! I actually found it at Plato’s Closet a couple years ago (so technically it’s been recycled twice!) I was really upset a couple month’s ago when I was folding my laundry and saw that one of the straps broke. Has this ever happened to you?!
Never fear! We can save it together!
A few quick and easy steps and we can turn this sad moment into a fun project! All you need is a sewing machine, scrap fabric and an afternoon!
Once you have removed the straps, set your dress aside.
Next, measure the length that your will need to cut your straps on yourself or just use strips of fabric 20″ long. Make sure you make two. Then, cut strips evenly so they are 4″ wide. (I used a rotary cutter and straight edge.)
Fold each side to make a 1/2″ seam. Sew the seams in place using a straight stitch. Repeat on the second strip.
I criss-crossed my straps, but if you want to keep it simple, then sew them like normal. To make it easier, I actually put the dress to make sure the straps fit well. Pin the straps to the dress, once you have fit them to the size that works for you. Finally, sew the straps to the front of your dress.
Trim off the the extra fabric.
Here’s an easy tutorial with photos on how to add straps to a strapless dress. Please note, they make their straps a bit differently than I do. Make which ever one’s you feel most comfortable with!
Here is what it looks like after!
