I love making furniture my own! I had a coworker a few months ago who was moving out of her house and getting rid of all of her furniture.
She had these two wooden footstools and as soon as I saw them, I knew exactly how I wanted to update them!

Remove the old seat cover using scissors or a box cutter. This can be a little messy.
Once stripped down to the “base,” place your drop cloth on the ground outside and use your spray paint on the base of the stools.

This is going to take a couple coats. Make sure you pick up spray paint that is paint and primer, otherwise it make take three or four coats.

Let dry OUTSIDE overnight. Otherwise your home will smell like paint!

To start the base of your seat, tie your macrame cord around one side of your base.

Now wrap the cord around the base on opposite sides to form the core “seat”, making sure your are wrapping very tightly and close together.

Continue down the length of the base until you reach the end. This part can be a little confusing.
Wrap your cord around ONE SIDE and tie in a knot, similar to how you started the row. Trim the excess cord down and tuck “behind” your seat.

You’re halfway done!

On the other sides of the base, tie your second color in a similar fashion to how your knotted your first color cord.

You can weave whatever pattern you want!

If you want to keep it simple, you can weave the “over then under” technique, or you can make up your own pattern!

One helpful hint for weaving, since it is almost impossible to gauge how much cord you will need is cut enough cord for a few rows at a time.
You can connect each row of cords with a knot and hide it underneath your base color.

Continue down the rows alternating your pattern until you reach the end! I made a pyramid shaped pattern.

I heart upcycling! Like I said, I THRIVE on making things my own. I would rather take the time to upgrade what I have than buy something new! What about you??
