Having stood the test of time, there are some confectionary delights that have continued to excite and delight us over the decades. With their own stories to tell, and flavors that we still love to taste, if you haven’t tried these old school candy bars yet, you can’t call yourself a candy lover!
Let’s look at some of the top candy bars from yesteryear, that are still loved today:
Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar
Way back in the year 1900, Milton S. Hershey introduced Americans to a flavor sensation that would change the chocolate landscape, forever: the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar. Bringing the luxurious taste of milk chocolate to the American masses, the rich flavor, smoothness, and creaminess of Hershey’s chocolate was unparallelled at the time, and likely down to the use of fresh milk when making it. setting the standard for milk chocolate, it soon became an essential product found in households all over America, and remains so to this day.
Toblerone
With a history almost as long as Hershey’s chocolate bars, Swiss Toblerone’s were invented in 1908, and quickly caught the attention of the consumer, with their distinctive and unique, triangular shape. Inspired as it was by the Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland, the Toblerone bar is best loved for its harmonious blend of almond nougat, honey, and Swiss milk chocolate in all its smooth creaminess, and its instantly recognizable packaging.
Butterfinger
With a crispy, crunchy core of peanut butter, and a coat of smooth milk chocolate, Butterfinger was created in 1923 and packaged up for sale to the masses soon after. With a taste and texture quite unlike anything Americans had experienced before, it wasn’t long before it became a firm favorite among candy lovers. Helping to seal its popularity, were a series of smart marketing campaigns from the creators of the Butterfinger, Curtiss Candy Company in Chicago, who asked the public to help it choose the bar’s name.
Milky Way
Named not after the galaxy, in fact, but after a popular malted milkshake of the time, the Milky Way bar debuted in America in 1923, having been created by the now world famous Mars company. Marketed as being a malted chocolate milk but in candy bar form, the light, airy texture of the nougat center, combined with the caramel and milk chocolate of the coating, appealed to children in particular, making it a popular snack that wouldn’t ruin your appetite.
Kit Kat
A little further down the candy creating timeline, in England in 1935, comes the Kit Kat, created by Rowntree’s of York, and now produced on a global scale by the giant of the candy world: Nestle. Known and loved for its crispy wafer twin fingers (or quadruplet fingers in bigger bars), encased in the smoothest of milk chocolate, Kit Kat’s creators soon came up with a slogan that everyone was familiar with: Have a Break, Have a Kit Kat. Symbolizing a shared love of candy and a sense of comradery, the idea of snapping off a candy finger to share with someone, came to epitomize this much beloved candy bar.
Of all the most popular candy bars, choosing one would of course be entirely subjective (and you probably have your own favorite, which may or may not be on this list) but in terms of sales, these old school candy bars are still ringing in the profits, with most doing so more than a century since they were created.
