Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Will Be Missing Fan Favorite Modes at Launch

Activision has confirmed all game modes that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer will be in at launch, though fans may be sad to see that some of the fan-favorite modes in action will be missing. Call of Duty enthusiasts who pre-ordered the digital version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is able to play through the game’s campaign in Early Access, but the real meat and potatoes of most Calls of Duty games are definitely From multiplayer.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be available on the multiplayer game’s proper launch date, October 28. On that day, Call of Duty fans will be able to battle it out in a variety of maps and game modes. Activision recently highlighted all 11 game modes that will be available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer on launch day, though there are a few notable omissions that may upset fans of the franchise.

The 11 multiplayer game modes that will be available at the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer launch are Control, Domination, Free for All, Ground War, Ground War Invasion, Hardpoint, Headquarters, Knockout, Prisoner Rescue, Search & Destroy, and Team Deathmatch. Most of these are set up for Call of Duty’s traditional 6v6 gameplay, though Ground War and Ground War Assault are large, 32v32 affairs. Missing from the list are fan-favorite modes like Gun Game and Gunfight, unfortunately.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Game Modes List

  • Control
  • Domination
  • Free for All
  • Ground War (32v32)
  • Ground War Invasion (32v32)
  • Hardpoint
  • Headquarters
  • Knock Out
  • Prisoner Rescue
  • Search and Destroy
  • Team Deathmatch

Despite the gun game’s popularity, many Calls of Duty titles launch without it, only if it’s added as a temporary playlist later. This happened with the 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game as well as subsequent games, so it’s not surprising to see the same happen with Modern Warfare 2. As for Gunfight, a version of it has been a mainstay in Call of Duty games since it made its debut in 2019 MW, but it’s missing from Modern Warfare 2 at launch for some reason. It is possible that Gunfight will be added to Modern Warfare 2 at a later date, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of this writing.

Most of the multiplayer game modes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 should be familiar to fans of the franchise at launch, though there are also a few new modes to take note of. One is a knock-out, where there is no reaction and players have to hang on to the package longer than the enemy team. The second is Prisoner Rescue, where one team is tasked with protecting the hostages and the other team is tasked with rescuing them. Similarly to Knock Out, Prisoner Rescue in Modern Warfare 2 does not allow respawning.
