Stage 4 breast cancer is the most advanced breast cancer, and it’s the most difficult to treat. Because metastatic breast cancer spreads to other areas of your body, it can be hard to treat. 

Even if your doctors successfully treat cancer in your breast, cancer can still come back. When breast cancer spreads, it’s called metastasis. The cancer spreads through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream. 

The lymphatic system is a network of organs and vessels that carries fluid and cells to and from the heart, lungs, and other areas of the body. Cancer can travel through the lymphatic system to other areas of the body. The bloodstream carries cancer cells to other parts of the body. When cancer cells enter the bloodstream, they can travel to distant places in the body.
