How to Build Healthy Relationships

Relationships are a way of life and something that can bring great joy to people across cultures and around the world. With that being said, all relationships are not created equal. Some are chosen, some are default, and too many or not structured in a healthy way. If you’re looking to build healthy relationships, they require work from start to end.  Moreso, they require work from both sides and investment that has to be reciprocated in order to work. 1. Communication

Lack of communication is an easy way for any good thing to fall apart. Relationships, regardless of who they’re between, require clear communication in order to work. Without it, problems and miscommunications can arise. It’s impossible for a person to understand all of the needs of another person, even someone they love, at all times. This works vice versa too, which is why communication is so key for healthy relationships. If communication is something you’re struggling with, it may be time to enlist an outside resource. 

2. Clear Expectations

While this is most effective if you can set the parameters at the beginning of a relationship, expressing your expectations at any point is effective. If someone fails to honor your expectations or even defies them on purpose, it can be a sign that the relationship is not healthy and thus not worth your time. While you can’t always choose your relationships, like in the case of family, you can choose how often you surround yourself with toxic people. Avoid them where necessary to keep yourself happy and healthy. 

3. Reciprocation

No healthy relationship is complete without equal reciprocation. Reciprocation of feelings, thoughts, intent, output, and everything else can play a role in just how healthy your relationship is. While you can control your side of the equation and try your best to reciprocate another’s output, you can’t control what someone else puts in. In these cases, it may be time to sit down with the other person and discuss what the goals are, how you feel, how they feel, and what can be done to remedy. them

These are all desirable traits in a partner, but they’re also necessary for one’s self. Trust. Loyalty. Dependability. A healthy relationship can only thrive if they have these factors closely intertwined. It’s how both people feel safe, secure, and receptive enough to be their authentic selves in a relationship. If you don’t feel comfortable enough to do that with a person, it may be a sign of an unhealthy relationship 0 something that no one wants. Not only should you seek this out in the person on the other side of the relationship, but you should openly and willingly exhibit the traits yourself. 

6. Maintaining Balance

This is a sign of an unhealthy relationship, especially if forced by one partner. However, it’s important to note that having a regular and healthy sex life [with the presence of sex toys] can actually contribute to the balance in a relationship, as it promotes intimacy, physical and emotional connection, and overall satisfaction. Even if all you want to do is be with that special person, keep your schedule open to keep your support system alive.”
