IMAGINE THE FUTURE OF INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLING

As I consider what the International School of the future will look like, I’m driven to think about what it takes an effective school? What can we do to be successful in the face of new technology or new avenues and new pathways to higher education?

I am convinced that the most successful schools in the near in the future are those that continue to mold the next generation of scholars who can be able to contribute to society.

In order for all of this to take place, of course there needs to be an interaction. While technological advancement has enabled us to be closer than we have ever been before, it is crucial that to find the ideal connection between being superficially connected and real human interaction. This has never been more challenging, however the future of humanity depends on it.

There is a lot of focus on how technology is going to completely change the way we learn and, while we all believe that technology will be an important component of the future schools and classrooms, at the center of my education philosophy is the notion that, while the tools we employ to learn will definitely alter, the fundamental values of a successful learning environment should not be altered.

 

The main distinction in the future of schools, and, clearly, this includes international schools is the students. “The “Net” Generation is constantly connected to the internet, working multitasking, and creating multi-media environment. Therefore, how can schools remain on top of the speed of technological advancement? Some may say that we won’t be able to, and should not bother.

I believe that the schools that are successful in the near coming years will include those that continue to form the next generation of scholars who can be able to be a part of society.

Find a home within their surroundings and continue to.

According to David Willows who is Director of External Relations at the International School of Brussels says in his essay, “Imagining Schools of the Future”

“So (as educators) in establishing an enduring model for future schools,

We need to be wary of an escapade into a dream world of technology, but rather struggle to understand

We already believe to be the truth. This involves the use of all our knowledge, practices, our experiences and knowledge

Re-forming our knowledge into a narrative that better explains the motives and goals of our field”.

In the age of the internet, self-directed, personalized learning, there is a need for personalized, self-directed

There is also a requirement to reinforce the values that link us with each other in significant ways. A different word I’d use to describe this is “commitment”, a commitment to your personal development, in the knowledge that

To improve oneself is to better one’s surroundings. We need to foster the passion in our students to make a positive impact.

To allow all this to occur, of course there has to be an interaction. While technological advancement has enabled us to be increasingly connected before,

it is crucial that we find the ideal compromise between superficial relationships and deep human interaction. This has never been more challenging, and the future is in its hands. No matter if the school follows an international Curriculum or not it is a major issue for all schools in the future.
